The Kalgoorlie Miner, first published in 1895, was the newspaper of the Western Australian goldfields, printed in Kalgoorlie, about 600 kilometres east of Perth. Its classified pages carried a short column headed Matrimonial, and replies usually went to a box number or a pen name at the paper’s office.
“Friendship and above” most likely points at the heading over the column, Matrimonial: friendship first, then what the column is for. A snap was a snapshot photograph. The next ad in the column that day is from a young refined man who would like a girl companion, 20 to 25, “in fair position.” Fifteen years later the paper’s Matrimonial column was still using the shorthand: a lonely widower of 40, view above.
