Context

The Kalgoorlie Miner, first published in 1895, was the newspaper of the Western Australian goldfields, printed in Kalgoorlie, about 600 kilometres east of Perth. Its classified pages carried a short column headed Matrimonial, and replies usually went to a box number or a pen name at the paper’s office.

“View above” most likely points back to the heading over the column, Matrimonial: he would like to marry. The Kalgoorlie Miner carried the same shorthand in 1937, when a quiet young man of 35 asked for “friendship and above.” He signs with a reply code, H4, rather than a name.
