May 20, 1900, was a Sunday. The ad has no heading and ran among the paper’s local news notices. Seven weeks earlier, the same paper had carried a “young and handsome widow” who turned out to be publicity for a play. Seven months earlier, an Aspen lady had asked in Leadville’s paper for a husband of about forty, a miner preferred; this may be the same woman, but nothing in the ads says so. Aspen’s population had peaked at 10,000 or more in 1893, before the silver crash, and mining went on afterward on a smaller scale. Public domain in the United States: published before 1931.
Transcribed from the page image and checked against the original; spelling and punctuation are as printed, and words broken across lines are rejoined. Capital letters are also as printed: papers set the first line of each ad in capitals, so the capitals stop wherever that line ended, sometimes in the middle of a word.
