Context

Elitch’s Zoological Gardens opened on May 1, 1890, at 38th Avenue and Tennyson Street in northwest Denver, and the Elitch car was the streetcar that ran out to it. May 8, 1898, was a Sunday, so the Friday was May 6. The time is printed 4·15, with a raised dot. A month later the same paper carried a search for the gentleman who smiled going home from Chutes Park.
