The Express and Telegraph was an Adelaide newspaper, published from 1867 to 1922. Its front page carried advertisements, and among them, in 1888 and 1889, a short column headed Matrimonial. Writers signed with a pen name and had replies sent to a post office, to be collected there.
Lonely is his pen name, and G.P.O. is the General Post Office in Adelaide, where letters to him would wait to be collected. Fair circumstances meant comfortably off, and he offers an exchange of photographs and asks for her age and “other particulars.” The Matrimonial column held two ads that day: his, and below it one from a young English gentleman tired of the misery of single life.
