The Chutes was an amusement park on Haight Street, between Cole and Clayton streets, a few blocks east of Golden Gate Park. It had opened in 1895, and its main ride sent flat-bottomed boats down a long slide into a pool; in 1902 the park moved to Fulton Street. June 22, 1898, was a Wednesday, and the ad ran again the next day. Like a note from H. to L. in Chicago in 1877, it uses the personal column as a message board: one name, three initials, and no address. For where people in the Bay Area post personal ads now, see our guide to personal ads in San Francisco.
Public domain in the United States: published before 1931.
Transcribed from the page image and checked against the original; spelling and punctuation are as printed, and words broken across lines are rejoined. Capital letters are also as printed: papers set the first line of each ad in capitals, so the capitals stop wherever that line ended, sometimes in the middle of a word.
