San Diego’s land boom peaked in 1887 and went bust early in 1888, a year before this ad ran. He signs only J. S. and gives Sorrento, in San Diego County, as his address. A lady having some means was a woman with money or property of her own; eight years earlier, in Chicago, a young businessman asked for the same.
