The Anglo-American Matrimonial Journal was a paper of marriage ads, run from an office in Toronto. Canadiana, the Canadian Research Knowledge Network’s digital collection, holds one issue: Vol. 1, No. 1, December 1886. Its ads are sorted by class and sex, and the price rose with the class: a cent a word for the lower class, two for the middle, and three for the upper. Replies went to numbered boxes at the Journal’s office, and a few box numbers are printed twice.
Plain words like his fill the lower-class columns, where an ad cost a cent a word; the upper-class columns, at three cents, run to titles and fortunes. Newspapers later gave this kind of ad a name that says what he says here: lonely hearts.
